Carla Ribeiro

Carla Ribeiro is a doctoral student at the University of Sao Paulo in social anthropology. With a background in museum studies, her main research expertise is in and about museums in the context of Black people history and public representations of the Afro-Brazilian culture in Brazilian museums.

As a fellow, Carla Ribeiro will be at work on Implied Pasts, Desired Futures: African and Afro-diasporic Tourists in Dakar. It analyzes the production of historical narratives and collective identifications by different agents involved in Afrotourism in Dakar, the Senegalese capital. By drawing from and adding to the anthropology of history, Afro-diasporic studies and tourism studies, this project seeks to understand how local institutions, tourism workers, and tourists from other parts of Africa and the African diaspora build historical narratives on different scales and shape imaginations of collectivities such as "nation," "Africa," "diaspora," and "humanity.”
