Rethinking the Relationship Between Police and People

Description: The standard view of police authority tells us that police officers are organs of the law and that when they direct us to do something, we ought to obey them just as we ought to obey law. I argue that there are important differences in the moral relationships between people and law and people and police, making room for the view that police authority is something distinct than the personification of legal authority and the view that there is no duty to obey police directives.
