Jeffrey Murray
Fall 2022: Mandela Fellow

Jeffrey Murray is Senior Lecturer in Classics in the School of Languages and Literatures at the University of Cape Town. His research focuses on Latin prose and the history of classical scholarship.
For the fellowship project, Murray will be working on his current book project, Classics in Natal, 1843-2000, a history of classical scholarship and education in the KwaZulu-Natal region of South Africa from the establishment of the Colony of Natal until the closure of the department of Classics at the University of Durban-Westville. The project is particularly concerned with investigating historical archives to recover and reconstruct the experiences of non-elite and subaltern actors in Classics in Natal in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
