Downs is Professor of History at University of California, Davis, and the author of three books of history: <em>The Second American Revolution: The Civil War Era Struggle over Cuba and the Rebirth of the American Republic </em>(UNC, 2019); <em>After Appomattox: Military Occupation and the Ends of War </em>(Harvard, 2015); and <em>Declarations of Dependence: The Long Reconstruction of Popular Politics in the South </em>(UNC, 2011). With Northwestern's Kate Masur, he is co-editor of <em>The World the Civil War Made </em>(UNC, 2015), co-author of the National Park Service's first-ever NHL Theme Study on Reconstruction, and a leader of historians' efforts to lobby for the creation of the first-ever National Park Service site devoted to Reconstruction, created in January 2017 by President Barack Obama. With Georgia's Scott Nesbit, he created <em>Mapping Occupation</em>, a lauded digital history site on Reconstruction. He is also the author of the Flannery O'Connor Award-winning book of short stories <em>Spit Baths</em> (Georgia, 2006). He is currently completing the late Anthony Kaye's manuscript on Nat Turner and early American prophecy.</p>
