Celebrated World War I history scholar and author Dr. John H. Morrow Jr., will appear at the Boston Public Library’s Roxbury Branch and discuss African Americans in U.S. military history, on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at 10 AM. The Veterans and Friends of Edward O. Gourdin Veterans Memorial Park is hosting the event to celebrate African American Veterans Military Heritage Day. The library is located at 149 Dudley St., Roxbury, Massachusetts in Nubian Square.
The free lecture is open to the public. There also will be a book signing after the lecture.
Dr. Morrow, Franklin Professor of History at the University of Georgia, received the 2019 Pritzker Military Museum and Library Literature Award for lifetime achievement in military writing in recognition of his significant body of work dedicated to enriching the understanding of military history and affairs.
Books by Dr. Morrow include, The Great War: An Imperial History, examining the war as an imperial conflict with attention to gender and race, The Great War in the Air, Military Aviation from 1909 to 1921, Harlem’s Rattlers and the Great War: the Undaunted 369th Regiment and the African American Quest for Equality and, as co-editor, A Yankee Ace in the RAF: The World War I Letters of Captain Bogart Rogers. Dr. Morrow also contributed chapters on the air war in the Oxford Illustrated History of the First World War and the Cambridge History of the First World War.
Dr. Morrow served as an academic advisor to the U.S. World War I Centennial Commission and as the lead historical consultant on the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture’s exhibit, We Return Fighting: World War 1 and the Shaping of Modern Black Identity. He currently is co-chair of the National World War II Museum in New Orleans’ planning committee for its travelling exhibit on the African American experience in World War II.
